California Answers the Call: Supporting Wildfire Response Across the Pacific Northwest
Disasters don’t stop at borders. Through the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and the California Fire and Rescue Mutual Aid System, California is once again standing alongside neighboring states to help protect lives and communities threatened by large wildfires.
Since July 16, Cal OES has coordinated the deployment of local government firefighters, fire apparatus, and specialized emergency response personnel to Oregon and Washington through interstate mutual aid agreements. In total, Cal OES has deployed 1,040 personnel, 85 fire apparatus, and specialized teams to support wildfire suppression efforts across the Pacific Northwest.

These deployments reflect the long-standing partnerships that allow states to support one another during major emergencies. Mutual aid ensures experienced personnel and critical resources can be shared where they are needed most, strengthening the collective ability to respond to increasingly complex wildfire seasons. Just as California is providing assistance today, Oregon, Washington, and many other states have answered California’s requests for help during some of our most challenging disasters.
Supporting neighboring states does not come at the expense of California’s readiness. Cal OES and its partners continuously monitor fire conditions across California and strategically manage resources to maintain rapid response capabilities statewide to protect our communities when they are threatened by wildfires. Resource availability, weather conditions, and operational needs are evaluated every day to ensure California remains prepared for new and emerging incidents while fulfilling mutual aid commitments.
Wildfires do not recognize state lines, and neither does the commitment of emergency responders. Through mutual aid, California continues to strengthen regional resilience, support its partners, and demonstrate that when communities face their toughest moments, they do not stand alone.
