Japan Confirms First Avian Flu Case of Season
Authorities at the Shiraoi farm, where the outbreak was detected, have initiated the culling and disposal of approximately 459,000 laying hens. In response, the Hokkaido government has banned the transport of 620,000 hens across four nearby poultry farms within a 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) radius of the infected site.
In Tokyo, the central government convened a high-level meeting of relevant ministers to coordinate efforts across agencies to contain the spread.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara stressed the ongoing threat, stating, "This is the sixth consecutive season of an outbreak. Every season, (this disease) goes into full swing from around this time."
Agriculture Minister Norikazu Suzuki, addressing his ministry’s disease control team prior to the session, warned, "We're in a situation in which further infection cases may happen anywhere in the country."
