China Calls on Global Community to Heed ICJ Guidance
The ICJ’s advisory opinion has “made clear that Israel is under obligations to work with the UN and other agencies to ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance to the population in the occupied Palestinian territory,” stated Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a press briefing in Beijing.
Guo further expressed hope that the international community would adhere to the ICJ’s guidance, ease the dire humanitarian situation confronting the Palestinian people, and continue striving for a swift, fair, and enduring resolution to the Palestinian issue.
These comments came in the wake of the ICJ’s ruling on Wednesday, which declared that Israel is bound by the Geneva Convention to consent to and facilitate humanitarian relief efforts offered by third-party nations and neutral aid organizations.
These groups include the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), to guarantee adequate assistance reaches the Gaza Strip.
Referencing China’s formal submission to the ICJ in this matter, Guo noted that the court’s ruling “is a response to the concerns and expectation of the international community.”
