Sanae Takaichi Gets Elected as Japan's First Female Premier
The parliamentary vote commenced at 1:08 pm local time (0408 GMT).
Takaichi garnered 237 votes, securing enough support with the help of the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), which formed a coalition with the LDP.
In Japan’s 465-seat lower house, a minimum of 233 votes is required to become prime minister.
This victory makes Takaichi Japan's 104th prime minister. However, she will still need to gain backing from the upper house of parliament to fully solidify her leadership.
Earlier in the day, outgoing Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and his Cabinet resigned to facilitate the election of a new leader.
Ishiba held an extraordinary Cabinet meeting in the morning, during which all ministers tendered their resignations.
Ishiba had stepped down last month following mounting pressure and internal criticism from within the LDP due to a series of election losses.
