Sanae Takaichi assumes control as Japan’s first female PM
The lower house vote, broadcast live on NHK, saw Takaichi receive 237 votes—enough to win with support from the Japan Innovation Party and independent lawmakers. In the upper house, she secured the minimum 125 votes in a runoff against opposition leader Yoshihiko Noda.
The election took place during the 219th extraordinary session of the Diet. Outgoing Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and his Cabinet resigned earlier Tuesday to allow the transition.
Takaichi is expected to announce her Cabinet soon. Reports suggest Shinjiro Koizumi will be defense minister, Toshimitsu Motegi foreign minister, and Yoshimasa Hayashi internal affairs minister.
Her rise follows intense internal pressure on Ishiba after consecutive electoral defeats. The LDP, which has ruled Japan almost continuously except for six years, lost its upper house majority in July 2025 and a similar loss in the lower house in October 2024. Ishiba was the fourth Japanese prime minister to resign in five years, after Shinzo Abe, Yoshihide Suga, and Fumio Kishida.
