Japanese Premier Considers Dissolving Parliament Over No-Confidence Threat

(MENAFN) Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is reportedly considering dissolving the country’s parliament if the opposition moves forward with a no-confidence motion, local media said Tuesday.

Citing a Japanese news agency, reports indicate that Ishiba could preemptively dissolve the lower house before a no-confidence vote takes place in the House of Representatives. His ruling coalition, led by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komeito, currently holds 215 seats—18 short of the 233 needed to secure a majority in the 465-member chamber.

Tensions escalated last week when the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan threatened to file a no-confidence motion should the ruling bloc proceed with its proposed pension reform legislation.

Under Japanese law, the House of Representatives can be dissolved at any point before its members’ four-year term ends in fall 2028, allowing for snap elections.

Ishiba’s administration is under pressure on several fronts, including rising inflation, surging rice prices, and U.S. trade tariffs.

Last month, Agriculture Minister Taku Eto stepped down amid public uproar over remarks related to rice consumption. Eto admitted that he "never had to buy rice" due to gifts from supporters—comments that sparked sharp criticism as households grapple with the escalating cost of rice.

On trade, Tokyo has pressed Washington to reconsider its tariff policy, particularly the 25% import tax on vehicles. Although a planned 24% retaliatory tariff has been suspended, the U.S. continues to impose a 10% base tariff and additional duties on steel and aluminum imports.
