Trump Accuses China of Violating Trade Deal

(MENAFN) United States Leader Donald Trump has claimed that China has broken the terms of a recently established tariff arrangement, potentially reigniting friction in the already delicate trade ceasefire between the globe’s two most powerful economies.

The agreement, made public on May 12 following pivotal negotiations in Geneva, involved both nations consenting to suspend the majority of newly implemented trade duties dating back to early April, in anticipation of continued discussions.

On Friday, Trump addressed the issue via his Truth Social platform, stating: “China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US.”

Although he didn’t offer detailed explanations, he asserted that China had been in “grave economic danger” due to the tariffs, until the U.S. intervened with what he described as a “FAST DEAL.”

He further commented, “I saw what was happening and didn’t like it, for them, not for us,” before adding, “So much for being Mr. NICE GUY!”

Several media sources reported during the week that the Trump administration had instructed American firms to stop the export of advanced goods to China.

This includes high-end semiconductor design tools and specialized chemicals. Analysts cautioned that such actions could likely intensify the strain in relations with Beijing.

The May 12 deal had temporarily halted a 34 percent tariff increase that had been implemented on April 2, allowing a 90-day window for further negotiation.

In response, China matched the move with similar measures.

Both parties had also pledged to reverse tariff increases set after April 8, while maintaining a standard 10 percent levy on bilateral trade goods.
