China responds to US criticism
China’s Foreign Ministry has accused the United States of vilifying Beijing and promoting a Cold War mindset, following comments by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. In a statement released on Sunday, the ministry criticized Hegseth for ignoring regional desires for peace and instead pushing for bloc-based confrontation.
At the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore on Saturday, Hegseth warned that China represents a growing and possibly imminent threat. He urged US allies in the Indo-Pacific to increase their defense spending and accused China of trying to reshape the regional order and assert hegemonic control. He also highlighted concerns over Taiwan, claiming Beijing is preparing for a potential invasion.
China responded sharply, condemning Hegseth’s statements as "deplorable" and aimed at fueling division in the Asia-Pacific. The foreign ministry insisted that the only true hegemonic power in the region is the United States and blamed Washington for undermining peace and stability.
Reaffirming its stance on Taiwan, the ministry emphasized that the island is a domestic matter and warned the US against using the issue as a strategic tool. Beijing maintains its preference for peaceful reunification but has repeatedly warned that any push for Taiwanese independence could lead to conflict.
The rising tension between the US and China extends beyond geopolitics to economic disputes. Despite a recent agreement to pause new tariff hikes for 90 days while maintaining a 10% duty on imports, US President Donald Trump has accused China of breaching the terms of that deal.
