China Blasts U.S. Over Geneva Trade Talks Fallout
A representative from China’s Ministry of Commerce pushed back against U.S. accusations that China had failed to uphold the outcomes of the May discussions. Instead, the spokesperson argued that it was the U.S. that had backtracked on the consensus.
According to Beijing, China either lifted or paused specific tariff and non-tariff measures aimed at the U.S. "reciprocal tariffs" as part of its commitment to the Geneva agreement.
However, the spokesperson emphasized that following those negotiations, the United States imposed a series of what China calls "discriminatory" actions. These included new restrictions on AI chip exports, a ban on electronic design automation (EDA) software sales to China, and the revocation of U.S. visas for Chinese students.
“China, with a responsible attitude, has earnestly addressed, strictly implemented, and actively upheld the consensus of the economic and trade talks in Geneva. China's commitment to safeguarding its rights is resolute, and its implementation of the consensus reflects integrity,” the spokesperson stated.
The Commerce Ministry further stated, "These actions seriously violate the consensus reached during the Jan. 17 phone call between the two heads of state, severely undermine the existing consensus of the Geneva economic and trade talks, and significantly harm China's legitimate rights and interests."
It also accused Washington of stoking further trade tensions, which have injected greater unpredictability into bilateral economic ties.
“Instead of reflecting on its own actions, it unjustly shifts blame, baselessly accusing China of violating the consensus, which gravely deviates from the facts. China firmly rejects these unwarranted accusations,” the spokesperson added.
The statement concluded with a warning: if the U.S. continues its one-sided policies and harms Chinese interests, Beijing will not hesitate to introduce firm countermeasures to defend its legitimate rights.
